When you are traveling, you open Google Maps and enter an address, but the blue location dot shows the wrong place, or Maps guides you through a closed road or an incorrect route.
This usually happens when your phone’s location sensors, cached map data, or network connection are not providing accurate information. To fix it, check location permissions, clear the app cache, recalibrate your compass, and turn off VPN if it is enabled.
The fixes below can help solve most Google Maps navigation problems. Accurate directions matter when you are traveling, so start with these solutions to get your correct location. If the problem continues, the detailed steps below explain other possible causes and fixes.
Why Google Maps Gives Wrong Directions or Loses Your Location
Google Maps showing wrong directions or your location jumping around on the map can happen due to several reasons. Common causes include weak GPS signals, outdated map data or app versions, location permission problems, hardware issues, tall buildings blocking GPS signals, and battery-saving settings that limit location access. A newly built road or recent route change may also not appear until Google updates its map data.
Fix Google Maps Location Errors and Improve Accuracy
For better results in Google Maps, check that location access is allowed, turn on precise location, and recalibrate the compass if your position appears inaccurate. Move your phone in a figure-eight motion to help the compass adjust.
Android
Swipe down from the top of the screen to open quick settings, then tap the Location icon to turn it on. You can also check Google Maps permissions from your phone settings and make sure location access is allowed.
iPhone
Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, select Google Maps, and make sure Precise Location is enabled. If it is turned off, Maps may only detect your general area instead of providing accurate turn-by-turn navigation.

Recalibrate Your Phone’s Compass
If your phone’s compass is not detecting your direction correctly, you can recalibrate it to improve its accuracy. Hold your phone and move it in a smooth figure-eight (∞) pattern a few times. Tilt and turn the device in different directions so its sensors can adjust properly. Keep the phone away from magnets and metal objects while calibrating, as they can interfere with compass accuracy.
Clear Google Maps Cache and Data
Android: Go to Settings → Apps → Google Maps → Storage & cache → Clear cache. This removes temporary files without deleting your saved places or offline maps.
iPhone: iPhone doesn’t have a direct option to clear an individual app’s cache. Instead, go to Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Google Maps → Offload App, then reinstall Google Maps.
Turn Off Battery Saver / Power Saving Mode
Before starting a long drive, turn off your phone’s power-saving mode so your apps can work freely without battery-saving restrictions affecting their performance.
Android: Go to Settings → Battery → Battery Saver and turn it off.
iPhone: Go to Settings → Battery → Low Power Mode and turn it off.
Download Offline Maps for Low-Signal Areas
For areas with weak or no mobile signal, download the map before you start your trip. In Google Maps, search for your destination, open the place card, tap Download offline map, adjust the selected area to cover your route, and download it over Wi-Fi.
Once downloaded, the map can still use your phone’s GPS to show your location even when there is no internet connection. However, live traffic information will not be available offline.
Reset Network and Location Settings
A network reset can refresh your phone’s connection settings and may help improve location accuracy.
Android: Open Settings → System → Reset options → Reset Wi-Fi, mobile & Bluetooth. On Samsung phones, go to Settings → General management → Reset → Reset network settings.
iPhone: Open Settings → General → Transfer or Reset iPhone → Reset → Reset Network Settings.
Your saved Wi-Fi password will be removed, so you’ll need to enter the password again when reconnecting. You can use the same password or choose a new one.
How to Report Incorrect Roads or Routes to Google Maps
When a road is missing, closed, incorrectly shown, or Google Maps suggests a route that doesn’t match the actual road, you can report it directly through the app.
Open Google Maps, tap your profile picture or the side menu, select Help & feedback → Send feedback, and choose the option for reporting a map issue. Select the road or route that needs correction and provide the relevant details.
You can also report map errors from Google Maps on a desktop. Google reviews submitted changes before adding them to the map, so updates may take some time to appear.
Most Google Maps location and direction problems can be fixed by checking a few basic settings first. Start with location access and compass accuracy, then move on to cache, battery-saving settings, or offline maps if needed.
If Maps is showing a road or route that is actually wrong, the problem may be with the map itself rather than your phone. In that case, reporting the error to Google is the better option.
