If your WhatsApp backup is not restoring on your device, start by checking the common mistakes that prevent the restore process from working properly. Then try the fixes below one by one.
If your WhatsApp backup isn’t restoring, one of the easiest fixes is to uninstall the app and install it again. Before reinstalling, temporarily remove any extra Google accounts from your Android phone, or any additional iCloud accounts from your iPhone. Leave only the account that holds your backup signed in — this helps WhatsApp detect the right one instead of searching through multiple accounts.
Once you’ve reinstalled, verify the same phone number that was used when the backup was created. If you use a different number, WhatsApp won’t be able to find it. After verification, the app should automatically search for the available backup and give you the option to restore it.
If nothing shows up, double-check that the backup was actually uploaded to Google Drive or iCloud under that same account before trying again.
If you use an End-to-End Encrypted Backup, you will also need the password or encryption key created when the backup was enabled. The sections below cover the other common causes and fixes.
Quick Fix
- Use the same phone number and the same Google Account (Android) or Apple Account (iPhone) that were used when the backup was created.

- Make sure your device has enough free storage for the backup.
WhatsApp Backup Password: What to Check
If you enabled End-to-End Encrypted Backup in WhatsApp, you’ll need to enter the same backup password when restoring it. This password is separate from your Google Account (Android) or Apple Account (iPhone).
Without the correct password, WhatsApp can’t decrypt and restore the encrypted backup, even if your phone number and account are correct.
If you’ve forgotten the password, WhatsApp cannot reset or recover it for you. In that case, the encrypted backup cannot be restored, and you’ll need to set up WhatsApp again without that backup.

Update Google Play Services
On Android, WhatsApp uses Google services when checking and restoring your Google Drive backup. If Google Play Services has an issue, the backup may not appear or restore properly.
Update Google Play Services from the Play Store. If the problem continues, go to Settings → Apps → Google Play Services → Storage and clear the cache. Then restart your phone and try restoring the backup again.
Your Google Account Storage Could Be the Problem
On Android, WhatsApp backups count toward your Google Account storage. If your account is out of storage, WhatsApp won’t be able to complete a new backup. Check Google storage.
It’s also worth checking when the last backup was created. WhatsApp says backups that haven’t been updated for 5 months may be automatically deleted by Google. Check WhatsApp’s backup policy.
To reduce the backup size, turn off Include videos under WhatsApp → Settings → Chats → Chat backup.
Account and Number Mismatch
Your WhatsApp chats are linked to the phone number and account used to create the backup. If either one is different, WhatsApp won’t find the backup.
Use the same phone number with the correct country code that was used when the backup was created.

Local Backup on Android (When Cloud Restore Fails)
WhatsApp can keep local backup files on your Android phone. These backups are separate from your Google Account backup and can be useful when the cloud restore option doesn’t find a backup.
If a local backup is available, open your phone’s internal storage and look for the WhatsApp database files. The exact folder and file name can vary by Android version and WhatsApp setup.
If you find a suitable local backup, follow WhatsApp’s current restore steps before renaming or moving any files.
Restoring WhatsApp Business
WhatsApp Business isn’t just another version of the app — it runs as a separate app with its own setup and recovery process.
This trips people up when switching between the two. Regular WhatsApp’s setup doesn’t carry over automatically to Business, so chats you had before may not show up there.
If you run both on the same phone, treat them as two separate apps rather than expecting one to inherit the other’s data. Keeping this in mind ahead of time avoids a lot of confusion later.
Clear Cache
If the restore still fails after the earlier fixes, clearing WhatsApp’s cache can remove temporary files that are causing the app to behave incorrectly.
Go to Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Storage → Clear Cache.
This removes temporary files and does not delete your WhatsApp conversations. Do not tap Clear Data, as it removes the app’s local data.
