You tap the search bar on your Pixel to type something, and nothing happens. No keyboard pops up, just empty space where the keys should be.
It’s a frustrating glitch, but Google has listed a fix for it. In its October 2026 update notes, Google describes a problem where the keyboard sometimes fails to appear when you tap a search box. The word “sometimes” matters here: the fix covers one specific bug, so it may not solve every case.
The update came out on October 6, but it doesn’t land on every phone at once. Reports of Google’s announcement say it rolls out in phases over about a week, depending on your phone and carrier. If it hasn’t reached you yet, you may just be waiting your turn. Below is what Google has confirmed, and what you can try right now.
What Google has confirmed
The keyboard fix is listed under Apps in the October update notes, and it applies to these models:
- Pixel 8, 8 Pro and 8a
- Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold and 9a
- Pixel 10, 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, 10 Pro Fold and 10a
- Pixel 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro XL and 11 Pro Fold
Google’s wording is “search input fields” in general. It doesn’t name one specific search bar, so don’t assume the problem is limited to a single place on your phone.
Step 1: Install the update (the official fix)
Go to Settings > System > Software updates, where Google says the update status appears, and follow the on-screen instructions. Pixels install downloaded updates in the background, and Google says they become active the next time you restart, so restart the phone once it’s done.
The October 2026 Pixel update targets the 2026-10-05 security patch level, according to Google’s Pixel Update Bulletin. To check yours, open Settings > About phone > Android version and look at Android security update. Some reports cite October 1 for this release, so a date in early October likely means you already have it. If your date is earlier, check for an update. Availability can vary by device and carrier, so if it hasn’t arrived yet, try the steps below while you wait.
Steps 2 to 5: Workarounds you can try now
Everything below is general troubleshooting, not something Google has said fixes this particular bug. Google’s own advice for misbehaving apps is to restart the phone after each step, so do that.
Step 2: Force stop and clear Gboard’s cache
- Open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Gboard.
- Tap Force stop, then OK.
- Tap Storage & cache > Clear cache.
Stop at Clear cache. Don’t tap Clear storage, which Google says permanently deletes all of the app’s data.
Step 3: Clear the Google app’s cache
Same path, but choose Google instead of Gboard. Nothing in Google’s notes says this app is involved, so treat it as a low-risk try, not a known cause.
Step 4: Remove Gboard’s updates
Gboard is built into the Pixel, so it has no normal Uninstall button. Google’s steps for essential Pixel apps are: touch and hold the app, tap App info, tap More (the three dots), then Uninstall updates and OK. If Gboard has no icon to hold, open Settings > Apps > See all apps > Gboard instead. Google warns that any data saved in the app will be erased, so you may need to set your Gboard preferences up again. Save this step for after Steps 2 and 3. Once it’s done, test the keyboard, and you can get the latest Gboard update again from Google Play.
Step 5: Bypass the keyboard problem
- Search from inside the Google app instead of the home screen bar.
- Use the mic icon for voice input.
- Install a second keyboard such as SwiftKey and switch under Settings > System > Keyboard > On-screen keyboard. If it opens in the broken field, the problem is specific to Gboard.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I factory reset my Pixel over this?
No. Google has already listed a fix, and a reset costs you hours of setup. Install the update and use the workarounds above first.
I have a Pixel 6 or Pixel 7. Will I get this fix?
They aren’t on Google’s list for this fix. Both do get the October update, but the keyboard fix isn’t listed for them. Reports also describe October as likely the last update for the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro. Stick with the cache steps and a backup keyboard.
Will clearing the cache remove my keyboard settings?
Google describes Clear cache as deleting temporary data, while Clear storage deletes everything the app stores. That’s why only the first is recommended here.
The update is installed but the keyboard still vanishes sometimes. What now?
Test in Safe mode, which Google recommends for finding out whether an app you downloaded is causing a problem. On a Pixel 6 or later, press and hold the Power and Volume Up buttons for a few seconds, tap and hold Power off or Restart, then tap OK. When “Safe mode” shows at the bottom of the screen, see whether the keyboard problem goes away. If it does, an app is likely the cause, so remove recently downloaded apps one at a time, restarting normally after each. Safe mode removes some home screen widgets and turns on airplane mode. To leave it, press and hold Power and Volume Up again and tap Restart.
