How to Clean USB Port Dust Safely with Straw and Cotton Hack

If your phone stops charging. You plug in the cable. Nothing happens. You wiggle it. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it does not. You think the charger is broken, and are considering buying a new one. But the problem is not the charger. The problem is inside your phone’s USB port.

First, light a flashlight in the charging port and look inside. If you see dust, or small fibers of cloth accumulated at the bottom, clean it. This prevents the cable from connecting.

I have cleaned hundreds of USB ports. Samsung, iPhone, Pixel, OnePlus, Xiaomi. Most people use needles or pins. That is dangerous. You can break the pins inside the port. Now here is the hack.

Take a plastic straw. Any straw works. The ones from juice packs are best because they are thin. Cut the straw at an angle. Make a pointed tip. Not too sharp. Just angled.

Take a small piece of cotton. Roll it between your fingers. Make a tiny ball. The ball should fit inside the straw. Push it into the straw tip. Leave a little cotton sticking out.

Now you have a tool. Soft on one end. Plastic on the other.

Must Turn off your phone. You do not want short circuits. Insert the straw tip into the USB port. Gently. Do not force it. Move it around. The cotton will catch the dust. The straw will scrape the sides. Then pull it out. You will see grey fluff on the cotton. That is the dust bunny. Repeat two or three times. Use fresh cotton each time. Now check the port with a flashlight. Clean? Good. Plug in your charger. It should click into place. No any wiggling needed.

Why does this work better than other methods?

Signs your USB port has a dust bunny.

The charger falls out easily. You have to hold the cable at an angle. Charging stops when you move the phone. Fast charging never starts. The phone says “check your charger connection.”

If you see any of these signs, clean the port.

One more tip. After cleaning, restart your phone. Sometimes the phone remembers the bad connection. A restart resets the charging circuit.

What if cleaning does not work?

Then the problem could be the cable, the charger, or the charging IC on the motherboard. But in eighty percent of cases, dust is the culprit.
