How To Fix Android Phone Brightness Changing Automatically

Published: June 29, 2026

If you also have the problem of brighness, your phone brightness also change automatically when you are on a call or scrolling for some work? The brightness suddenly becomes low, you increase it manually, but the next time it again becomes dim. To fix this issue, you do not need to go into any long settings. Most of the time, turning off Adaptive Brightness solves the problem.

A few days ago, I was going for a walk when I received a missed call. I took my phone out of my pocket. The sunlight had already faded, and there was a little darkness around me. Because of walking, my eyes were slightly tired. When I tried to check the missed call, the phone brightness was too low, and I could not see the screen properly. I tried to change the settings, but it was not working at that time.

When I came back to my floor, there was a lot of bright light around me. I calmly opened the Adaptive Brightness setting and turned it off within one minute. After that, my brightness was completely under my control.

Sometimes it may feel strange that a feature designed for convenience can sometimes take control away from users. But there is a reason behind this smart adjustment system.

The world is moving forward every day, and with this progress, smartphone companies are introducing modern features for the convenience of their users. These features are not only beneficial for users but also help in taking care of device health.

If any feature is added, users should also get its control. This means users can turn it on when they need it and turn it off when they do not need it.

What Is Adaptive Brightness and How Does Auto Brightness Work?

Adaptive Brightness is an advanced feature that automatically adjusts your phone’s screen brightness based on your surroundings and usage patterns. It helps provide a comfortable viewing experience while also improving battery efficiency.

In my opinion, this feature can be improved with a smarter control option. We can set brightness according to our choice. For example, if we set brightness at 60%, then the system can work in a way that when the mobile is not being used, it can reduce brightness automatically. But when we start using it and scrolling, it should return to the 60% level that we fixed.

The day is not far when companies may highlight this type of smart control with better improvements.

How to Turn Off Auto Phone Brightness

Turning off auto brightness is not any rocket science, and you do not need to go through any long or complicated settings. The steps can be slightly different depending on your phone model, but most Android devices follow a similar process.

  1. Open the Settings app on your phone.
  2. Go to Display or Display & Brightness settings.
  3. Find the option called Adaptive Brightness, Auto Brightness, or Automatic Brightness.
  4. Turn this option Off.
  5. Now adjust the brightness manually according to your preference.

If you turn it off, the brightness will stay exactly where you set it. Now the control will be completely in your hands. You can turn it on whenever you need it and turn it off whenever you want.

Advantages of Adaptive Brightness

This feature is designed for a special purpose. It helps reduce the impact of sudden brightness changes on your eyes and adjusts according to the surrounding light conditions, so you do not need to change the brightness again and again.

One of the biggest advantages of Adaptive Brightness is that it helps reduce eye strain. When you are in a dark place, it lowers the brightness, and when you move into a brighter environment, it increases the brightness to make the screen easier to see.

Besides this, it also helps save battery. As Android’s official battery-saving guide explains, When the brightness becomes lower, the battery load also decreases, which reduces consumption and allows your battery to last longer.

However, if your eyesight is sensitive or you are facing any issue, you can turn off this feature and keep the brightness according to your comfort and vision.

Turn off auto brightness depending on the phone model

Different phones and models may have slightly different settings. That is why I am adding some common models below according to their settings. If your phone matches any of these models, you can follow the same steps to turn off Adaptive Brightness.

Android (Most Devices):

  • Settings → Display → Adaptive Brightness → Turn Off

Samsung Galaxy:

Google Pixel:

OnePlus:

  • Settings → Display & Brightness → Adaptive Brightness → Turn Off

Xiaomi / Redmi / POCO:

  • Settings → Display → Brightness Level → Automatic Brightness → Turn Off

iPhone:

Apple’s official iPhone guide mentions that you need to go to Settings → Accessibility → Display & Text Size → Auto-Brightness → Turn Off

Usually, fixing this issue is just a few tips away. No matter which phone model you’re using, turning Adaptive Brightness on or off doesn’t affect your device’s performance at all. It’s a completely optional feature—if you find it helpful, great; if not, there’s absolutely no harm done.
