Fix Google Pixel Screen Flickering & Green Line Issue (Step-by-Step Guide)

Published: October 27, 2026

A few seconds of flicker, or a thin colored line that was not there yesterday, is enough to make anyone nervous. Is it just a software hiccup, or has the screen itself given up?

Google’s own help page is fairly direct about this. It says a Pixel screen that flickers, shows a green tint or draws lines may have a hardware issue, and it asks you to start with a system update. If the problem is still there after that, the next step is to contact support or get the phone repaired.

The company has also confirmed display problems on a limited number of Pixel 8, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL phones, and it replaces the display at no charge on eligible ones for three years after the original purchase. Google’s pages do not explain what causes the fault, so below you will find what you can check at home and how to find out whether your phone qualifies for a free repair.

Quick Fix for Pixel Screen Flickering

Start with these three checks. They take a few minutes and rule out the easy causes.

  1. Restart the phone. On Pixel 6 and later, hold the Power and Volume up buttons for a few seconds, then tap Restart. On Pixel 5a and earlier, hold the power button for about 30 seconds, or until the phone restarts. If the screen is frozen, hold the power button for up to 60 seconds and let go when the Google “G” logo appears.
  2. Install updates. Open Settings, tap System, then Software updates. Some models label it System update. This is the first step Google gives for flickering, green tint and lines.
  3. Take a screenshot while a line or tint is visible. Open the screenshot afterwards. If the line is missing from the picture, it is probably not coming from your apps or the system software, which makes a display problem more likely. If the line shows up in the screenshot too, software is the more likely source. This is a practical check, not an official Google step, and it is a hint rather than proof. It does not work for flicker, because a screenshot captures only a single frame.

If the line is still there after all three, jump to the green line section below.

Software Glitch or Hardware Problem? How to Tell

Neither list is proof, but together they give you a good idea of where the problem sits.

More likely software or an app:

  • The flicker shows up in one app or only at certain moments
  • It stops after a restart or an update
  • It is gone in safe mode

More likely hardware:

  • A line or tint stays through restarts and in safe mode
  • A line is visible on the screen but missing from a screenshot of it (a hint, not proof)
  • The problem started after a drop, water contact or a cracked screen

A technician’s inspection is what settles it.

Fix Pixel Screen Flickering at Home

These steps go from simple to slightly more involved. None of them can repair a physical display fault, but they can catch problems caused by settings or apps.

Test Adaptive Brightness

Open Settings, then Display & touch (older Android versions call this menu Display), and turn off Adaptive brightness. Use the phone for a few minutes, ideally in dim light. If the flicker disappears, leave it off. If nothing changes, turn it back on. This is a test, not a fix Google lists for flickering.

Test Smooth Display

On models that have it, go to the same menu and turn off Smooth Display. It raises the refresh rate on supported phones and uses more battery, so switching it off is harmless to try. If the flicker stops, you have found the trigger. If not, switch it back on.

Check for a Problem App in Safe Mode

Safe mode turns off every app you downloaded, so it shows whether one of them is behind the flicker.

  • Phone on (Pixel 6 and later): hold the Power and Volume up buttons for a few seconds, touch and hold Power off or Restart, then tap OK.
  • Phone off: press the power button, and when the animation starts, hold Volume down until the phone finishes starting.

You will see “Safe mode” at the bottom of the screen. Safe mode removes some home screen widgets, so take a screenshot of your layout first if you use them. It also turns on airplane mode, so switch that off if you want Wi-Fi or calls while testing.

Use the phone for a while, since an occasional flicker can take time to show up. If the flicker is gone, an app is the likely cause. If it is still there, Google’s safe mode guide says an app is not causing the problem. Safe mode switches off only the apps you installed, though, so built-in apps and the system itself keep running. Restart the phone normally to leave safe mode. If your screen also freezes or ignores touches, this Pixel screen freezing guide covers that side.

Remove Recently Added Apps

If safe mode cleared the flicker, uninstall your most recent apps one at a time and restart after each one. When the flicker stops, the last app you removed was the cause. You can reinstall the others.

If none of this helps, Google’s Pixel screen help page says to contact support or get the phone repaired.

Green Line on Pixel Screen: Can You Fix It Yourself?

Usually not. A green line that stays after a restart, after an update and in safe mode, and that does not appear in a screenshot, is not something a setting can switch off. Treat it as a display problem and move to repair rather than spending hours on more tweaks. A green tint across the whole screen falls under the same advice.

Will Google Repair a Pixel Display Line for Free?

Sometimes. Google has run extended repair programs for specific models. Two of them cover display lines or flicker:

  • Pixel 8: The Extended Repair Program for Pixel 8 covers phones that show a vertical line running from the bottom of the display to the top, or a display flicker, and whose IMEI or serial number qualifies. Coverage lasts three years from the original retail purchase and includes one free display replacement. The Pixel 8 went on sale in October 2023, so the earliest buyers are reaching the three-year mark right about now. Check your purchase date.
  • Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL: Google’s Pixel 9 Pro repair program also lasts three years from purchase. It covers a bottom-to-top vertical line, and flicker on Pixel 9 Pro devices counts too. Repairs started on December 8, 2025.

Not sure which model you own? Open Settings, then About phone, then Model.

To see if your phone qualifies, enter your IMEI in Google’s repair checker. You can find it under Settings, then About phone. Approval is not automatic. The repair center inspects the phone first, and a cracked display, cracked cover glass or liquid damage may make it ineligible. In that case, there may be a repair fee. Also, Google’s wording is “vertical line” and “flicker,” so whether your green line counts is decided at inspection. If your phone does not qualify, a similar display problem may still be covered by Google’s Limited Warranty.

How to Prepare Your Pixel for Repair

Do these before you hand the phone over or mail it in:

  1. Back up your data. Open Settings, tap System, then Backup, and tap Backup now. Repair centers are not responsible for lost data.
  2. Install pending updates so the technician works on the latest system.
  3. Turn on Repair Mode. Go to Settings, then System, then Repair mode. Only certain devices support it, and the repair center may still decide a data reset is needed. Do not create a new PIN while Repair Mode is on. Google explains the details on its Repair Mode page.
  4. Take out the SIM card and keep it with you.
  5. Start the repair through the checker linked above, or contact the store where you bought the phone.

If the screen is too glitchy to reach these menus, contact Google support and tell them what you are seeing.

Conclusion

Restart, update and try safe mode first, since those catch the cases caused by software. If a line or flicker survives all of that, check your repair eligibility sooner rather than later, especially on a Pixel 8 that is close to its three-year limit.

Frequently Asked Questions

My phone is a Pixel 8 Pro, Pixel 7 or Pixel 6. Does a free repair program cover it?

Google’s Pixel 8 program page names the Pixel 8 only, and the Pixel 8 Pro is not named there. When this article was written, the program list on Google’s warranty help page showed no display-line program for the Pixel 6 or 7. The IMEI checker is the quickest way to get a definite answer. If the phone is not covered, the Limited Warranty may still apply depending on your warranty status and region.

What if the flicker comes back after a repair?

Repairs under the Pixel 8 program carry a 90-day warranty. For the Pixel 9 Pro programs, it is 90 days or the rest of the original warranty, whichever is longer. Contact the repair center or Google support within that period and explain that the problem returned.

Should I factory reset my Pixel to remove a green line?

Google’s screen help page does not list a factory reset for flickering, tint or lines. A reset erases the phone, so back up first and only do it if support asks you to.

Do I need proof of ownership, and can I go to my carrier store?

On the Pixel 9 Pro program page, Google says you may be asked for proof of ownership and that you must be 18 or older, otherwise a parent or guardian handles the process. Carrier stores and retailers may help, but they follow their own repair policies. Google recommends its official repair channels for the fastest support.
